8th Grade Topographical Self-Portraits
The 8th Grade embarked on a self-portrait unit that combined geography and art. They learned about facial proportions and the meaning of topography—the study or detailed description of the surface features of a region. Then, the students drew detailed self-portraits in pencil. They translated those self-portraits topographically with layers of cardboard, using more layers of cardboard for higher regions of their faces. Finally, these artists chose to represent their identities by drawing images of places, people, objects and words using oil pastels and colored pencils on black paper.
