1st Grade Gyotaku
1st Grade made gyotaku prints from rubber fish by painting and pressing paper on top of the fish. Then, they layered tissue paper on white paper. They painted the tissue paper to transfer the ink from the tissue paper to the white paper. Next, students used charcoal rubbings to create waves on their water. Finally, these artists printed kanji (Japanese character writing) onto Styrofoam and printed these characters onto their paintings. Artists chose the kanji words they found most meaningful or interesting.
